Big Write takes place every fortnight to provide the children with regular extended writing time. We cover every genre in every year group frequently throughout the year. Big Writing is the development of the ‘writing voice’ through fast, fun, lively and predominantly verbal activities and is on the premise:
IF A CHILD CAN SAY IT, A CHILD CAN WRITE IT!
Big Talk also takes place every fortnight to provide the children with regular opportunities to develop and extend their vocabulary. Children in FSU and KS1 take part in Big Talk. It also takes the place of Big Write for some KS2 children in order to build confidence and aid them in the various features of each genre. Big Talk provides children with opportunities to share and develop their thoughts and ideas.
Both Big Write and Big Talk are centred around the termly topics within class, or the weekly Talk Topic across the school. These topics can be anything from ‘Who do you think deserves to win X Factor?’ to ‘We will remember them…’ for Remembrance Day. In this way, culturally relevant topics are discussed freely and any child in any Year group can talk to another child or adult in school to express their thoughts.
